The drive unit (16) for the manure pump includes a first set of pulleys with a first pulley (43) mounted on an input shaft (18) and a second pulley (44) mounted on an output shaft (19), and a second set of pulleys (33, 34) mounted on an intermediate shaft (20). One of the pulleys in the second set is aligned with the input shaft pulley, and a cord (35) or the like extends around these two pulleys, and likewise the other pulley in the second set is aligned with the output shaft pulley, and a second cord (36) or the like extends around the two pulleys. Both sets of pulleys include a pulley with a variable effective diameter aligned with a non-variable diameter pulley in the other set.
