Catheter and needle assemblies (1) with spring-powered retractable needles(100) are described. The assemblies caninclude a hollow handle (10), a grip portion (30), a catheter hub (60) with acatheter (68), and a needle (100). The needle can have afirst position in which the needle is slidably disposed within the catheterand a second position in which the needle is slidably removedfrom the catheter and retracted at least in part into the hollow handle. Thegrip portion can include a trigger portion (130) that activatesa spring (108) to move the needle from the first position into the secondposition. In the second position, a sharp distal point (104) ofthe needle is shielded by the grip portion to prevent accidental needlesticks.
