A gaze fixation device with at least one optical element which includes a partially reflective surface 3, which allows a patient 11 to view a target 8 while simultaneously allowing the patient 11 to be viewed from an observation point 6, such as by a practitioner or recording device. The patient may be viewed along the same axis as their line of sight, whist maintaining focus on the target. This may be used for children or patients with learning disabilities. The optical element may be a partially transmitting mirror or beam splitter, with a metalized surface or dichroic coating. There may be a frame or housing to hold the surface in a fixed orientation.
