An endoscope apparatus includes: an illuminating section capable of irradiating illumination light formed by white light or light in a plurality of wavelength bands on a subject an image pickup section that includes a color filter constituted by a plurality of filters, and picks up an image of return light from the subject an illumination control section that controls the illumination section to irradiate the illumination light such that the illumination light is time-divided into two or more when the image pickup section picks up images of two or more return lights in the plurality of wavelength bands in a transmission wavelength band of at least one of the plurality of filters, and controls the illumination section to simultaneously irradiate the two or more illumination lights in the plurality of wavelength bands when the image pickup section picks up images of the return lights in a state where one or less return light is included in the two or more wavelength bands in the plurality of filters.
