An apparatus and method for sealing a ventilation cap of a storagecontainer, such as that formed between a neck of a container that defines afill openingof the container and a cap covering the fill opening of the container in aclosed positionof the cap relative to the neck to substantially obstruct passage of materialthrough thefill opening, comprises an arrangement of porous material around the neck tobridgeacross the ventilation gap so that air is enabled to pass through the porousmaterial intoor out of the container while solid material is obstructed from passage intothe interiorof the container via the ventilation gap when the fill opening is covered bythe capdisposed in the closed position. In a preferred arrangement of the apparatus,there isprovided a skirt of the porous material connected to the cap externally of theventilationgap.
