The present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating cancer comprising melatonin as an active ingredient, more specifically, a composition for preventing or treating cancer through inhibiting prion protein activity comprising the melatonin as an active ingredient, or inhibiting prion protein activity. It relates to a prophylactic or therapeutic composition for reducing the resistance to anticancer drugs. According to the present invention, the composition comprising the melatonin as an active ingredient has the effect of reducing the anti-cancer effect and anti-cancer drug resistance by reducing the expression of the increased prion protein expression in cancer cells or cancer cells with anticancer drug resistance.본 발명은 멜라토닌을 유효성분으로 포함하는 암 예방 또는 치료용 조성물에 관한 것으로, 더욱 구체적으로 상기 멜라토닌을 유효성분으로 포함하는 프리온 단백질 활성 억제를 통한 암 예방 또는 치료용 조성물, 또는 프리온 단백질 활성 억제를 통한 항암제 내성 감소용 예방 또는 치료용 조성물에 관한 것이다.본 발명에 따르면, 멜라토닌을 유효성분으로 포함하는 조성물은 암 세포 또는 항암제 내성을 갖는 암 세포에서 발현이 증가된 프리온 단백질의 발현을 감소시킴으로써 결론적으로 항암 효과 및 항암제 내성을 감소시키는 효과를 나타낸다.
