A sample collection apparatus 1, such as for saliva, comprises an ergonomic lip-engaging projecting surface 10 extending from an open end 12 of a container and a filter assembly 20 having a first gravity particle filter element which has an upwardly angled perforated conical surface 23 which forms an angle with the container wall 24 to form a pool sample material in a corner 25, in use. The sample passes through a second filter 22 and into a collection space 40 which may be selectively connected via rotational alignment of passageways in an interface 50 to an assay unit 60 which may contain a partial vacuum in a closed volume.
