The use of H3K9me3 modulation to enhance cognitive function and to treat disorders associated with anxiety is provided. The subject is administered a composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of an SUV39H1 inhibitor, such as an analog of ETP69. A therapeutically effective amount is effective to treat cognitive impairment and age-related diseases in aging.
