In the present invention there are described novel sulfate-reducing bacterium strains that grow under anaerobic conditions at pH values ranging within 3.9 to 9.5 and at a temperature ranging from 3 to 45 degC, and which reduce a sulfate to a sulfite, improve methanol as a carbon and energy source. Except for methanol, they do not require any additional carbon and energy sources and they are tolerant of metals. The invention can be used for decontamination of anaerobic water containing sulfuric acid, laden with metals and contaminated with radioactive substances, in particular for decontamination of pit and flooding water of uranium mines in which operation has been stopped or washing water from soil refining plants.
