A method for selecting a working area of a gas chromatography column in order to use said column for analytical chromatography under predefined conditions of mobile phase composition, mobile phase flow rate and single linear thermal ramp control. Said method comprises a step during which a working area is selected in which the chromatography column follows a quasi-linear relationship between the retention time and the boiling point of the members of a homologous series.
