PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method in which a holding element of a container is not arranged in a beam of an electric charge carrier in order to prevent electric charge carriers from an electric charge carrier source or an acceleration device from respectively striking the holding element or part of the holding element, when sterilizing the outside of the container, and as a result, to prevent a shadow of the beam of the electric charge carrier from occurring on a surface of the container.SOLUTION: The device 1 is provided for sterilizing particularly an outer wall of the container 2 by the accelerated electric charge carriers, and includes the electric charge carrier sources 6 and 7 for generating the electric charge carriers, and the accelerating device for accelerating the electric charge carriers in the direction of the outer wall of the container. The container 2 can move along a predetermined carrying passage 5 to the electric charge carrier sources 6 and 7 by a carrying device having at least one holding element for holding at least one container 2.
