The present invention relates to a holder that needs to be combined with an external object so that the external object moves around a remote motion center. The external object is preferably a medical instrument such as a cannula or trocar, and thus the remote motion center is the patient's abdomen. The holder consists of two members that generate both longitudinal and rotational movement. The holder can be used to support another object useful for performing endoscopic (laparoscopic) surgery, in one particular embodiment, the camera. The holder is also provided with means for generating both longitudinal and rotational movement according to the XYZ coordinates. Since the holder of the present invention occupies very little bedside space, it is particularly useful for work within a small area without sacrificing the functional work area of the instrument attached to the holder.
