A large-scale fermenter (2), to generate biogas from a biomass by the development of methane from solids, comprising a container (20) to hold the biomass with a biogas extraction connection, a gas-tight shrouding (44) of a gas-tight film (46) covering the container, which forms a gas-tight cover for the loading/unloading opening (30) and the support structure, is new. A large-scale fermenter (2), to generate a biogas from a biomass by the development of methane from solids, comprises a container (20) to hold the biomass with a biogas extraction connection, a gas-tight shrouding (44) of a gas-tight film (46) covering the container, over the stable support structure (24) on the base plate (22). It forms a gas-tight cover for the loading/unloading opening (30) and the support structure. The shrouding is of an elastic film, in a single layer or as a double layer with a gas space between the layers.
