THERE IS PROVIDED BY THIS INVENTION A METHOD FOR GENETICALLY TRANSFORMING AN ORCHID WITH A FOREIGN GENETIC CONSTRUCT VIA PARTICLE BOMBARDMENT. THE METHOD COMPRISES PRE- AND POST- BOMBARDMENT STEPS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE BOMBARDMENT. THE PRE-BOMBARDMENT STEP COMPRISES SQUASHING TARGET TISSUES OF THE ORCHID AND THE POST-BOMBARDMENT STEP COMPRISES AN ANTIBIOTIC SELECTION REGIME USING INCREASING ANTIBIOTIC CONCENTRATIONS. THE METHOD MAY APPLY TO ANY SPECIES OF THE FAMILY ORCH-IDACEAE. BY CARRYING OUT THE METHOD OF THE PRESENT INVENTION, WE HAVE SUCCESSFULLY PRODUCED TRANSGENIC DENDROBIUM SAVIN WHITE THAT CONFERS RESISTANCE TO CYMBIDIUM MOSAIC VIRUS (CYMV).
