A method may include controlling a ventilator to introduce mean airway pressure (MAP) variations in a patient to induce slow waves of substantially fixed amplitude and period to the patient. The method may also include analyzing arterial blood pressure in the patient with respect to the MAP variations and determining, based on the analyzing, whether an autoregulatory mechanism associated with the patients brain is operating properly.
