A catheter packaging system comprising a catheter 10 in a sealed, impermeable sterilised envelope 2 supplied with a pouch of antimicrobial sterilising fluid 20. Also a method wherein the catheter 10 is removed from the pocket 2, the bag 2 is retained and filled with disinfectant from the container 20, and the catheter 10 is returned to the sleeve 2 for sterilisation. Optionally, the bag 2 may contain the antibacterial solution pouch 20 inside the envelope. The bag may have an adhesive tab (fig 3, 31) adjacent to the opening end. The sterilising medium may comprise an aqueous chlorine solution obtained from dichloroisocyanurate, or from hypochlorite solution, with a concentration between 0.05 and 0.5% wt/vol.
