The present invention relates to the use of xanthinoxidoreductase inhibitors,or apharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, for improving of renal function in asubject inneed thereof, such that the renal function of the subject is preserved and thesubject doesnot exhibit further age expected decline in renal function. Thexanthinoxidoreductaseinhibitors of the present invention are exemplified by compounds that comprisetheformula:wherein R1 and R2 are each independently a hydrogen, a hydroxyl group, a COOHgroup,an unsubstituted or substituted C1-C10 alkyl group, an unsubstituted orsubstituted C1-C10 alkoxy, an unsubstituted or substituted hydroxyalkoxy, a phenylsulfinylgroup or acyano (-CN) group, and wherein R3 and R4 are each independently a hydrogen orhave thestructure of Formula A and T connects A to the aromatic ring shown above atR1, R2, R3 orR4:and wherein R5 and R6 are each independently a hydrogen, a hydroxyl group, aCOOHgroup, an unsubstituted or substituted C1-C10 alkyl group, an unsubstituted orsubstitutedC1-C10 alkoxy, an unsubstituted or substituted hydroxyalkoxy, COO-GlucoronideorCOO-Sulfate.
