Control of material and/or heat flows in a process, based on the proportion of the amounts of ammonia of carbon dioxide in a process gas stream or process liquid stream, is effected by (a) introducing a gas sample representative of the process stream in a relatively small amount of measuring liquid, which is in contact with a measuring electrode and a reference electrode, (b) measuring the potential difference between the electrodes, and (c) utilising the measured result as the magnitude for controlling the material and/or heat flows. Used in prepn. of urea from ammonia and carbon dioxide, prepn. of melamine from urea, and conversion of calcium nitrate into calcium carbonate.
