The Present invention discloses a generic portable machine vision apparatus for multi-crop (cereals like Rice, Wheat, Rye, Corn, Millet etc and pulses like Tur, Moong, Bengal gram, Urad, Masur/ Red gram etc) quality assessment and a method which eliminates the problems of laborious, time consuming effort of manual quality analysis of cereals and pulses. This system consists of a portable bench-top conveyor, a hopper, an automated mechanical spreading arrangement and an overhead scanner placed inside an enclosed cabinet. Sample (grains) is fed from the hopper. A mechanical separator separates the rice sample, so that, the sample are non- overlapping and non-touching to each other on the conveyor belt. The conveyor is controlled by a computer through data acquisition module connected through USB cable. The conveyor belt is separated into 4 frames using red coloured rubber strips. A proximity sensor senses the position on the frames and a computer generates a command to stop the movement of the conveyor belt based on the feedback from the sensor. The overhead scanner is mounted on a side of the conveyor, surrounded by an enclosed cabinet to stop the interference of the external light. As soon as the conveyor stops, the over head scanner scans the sample on the conveyor belt and analyses the sample using the digital image analysis techniques. The operation of the conveyor system is controlled by the application loaded in a computer. Different quality parameters of the rice like, big brokens, small brokens, damage, discolour, red grains, chalky grains, admixture, foreign matter, sound grain and the quality parameters of pulses like damage, admixture, immature, foreign matter, sound grain are determined based on the extracted features from the image.
