An intraocular lens (IOL) (10), comprising an optic having an anterior surface and a posterior surface, the optic having a central refractive region (18) for providing one refractive focusing power, and a diffractive region (20) disposed on one of the surfaces so as to provide a near and a far diffractive focusing powers. The IOL is sized so that at a first pupil size the IOL is a monofocal lens having a focusing power corresponding to the refractive focusing power provided by the central refractive region and as pupil size increases the IOL is a multi focal IOL with the diffractive region focusing varying amounts of light energy to the near and far diffractive focusing powers.
