Care and cleaning compositions for the mouth and teeth, comprising (a) 2-mercapto-NaNaNa-trimethyl-L-histidinium betaine (L-ergothioneine) (I) (b) at least one fluoro compound and (c) at least one anionic and/or amphoteric surfactant. The invention further relates to a cosmetic, non-therapeutic method for cleaning teeth with simultaneous vitalization of the gingiva and mucosa, and to the use of 2-mercapto-NaNaNa-trimethyl-L-histidinium betaine (L-ergothioneine) for vitalization of the gingiva and mucosa.
