A system and method for determining endoscopic dimensional measurementsincluding aprojector assembly comprising a light source for projecting light through atelecentric lens andinto a surgical site, and a mask coupled to the projector assembly. Lightprojected from the lightsource projects through the mask. The projected light through the mask may bea collimatedpattern which does not significantly change in size as a function of thedistance to a projectedplane. The projected light patterns may include multiple wavelengths of lightfor measurementsof different features of tissue and may be produced using a laser inconjunction with a lightshaping optical diffuser, or using a light emitting diode in conjunction witha light shapingoptical diffuser, or using a spatial filter. The projected light patterns maytake the form ofconcentric rings with each ring representing a radius of a given dimension.
