An overstroke mechanism for use with a surgical instrument includes anoverstrokesleeve, an overstroke biasing element, a spindle, an outer shaft, and anoverstroke pin. A firstcondition of the overstroke mechanism is configured to prevent a predeterminedclosure forcefrom acting on the jaw members of the surgical instrument when a stroke isprovided by ahandle assembly of the surgical instrument that is greater than thepredetermined closure force.A second condition of the overstroke mechanism is configured to prevent afurtherpredetermined closure force from acting on the jaw members of the surgicalinstrument whenthe jaw members are approximated on an obstruction.
