An invention pertains to an inhalator for the inhalation of powdered drug preparations from capsules. The inhalator has a mouthpiece or nosepiece and assembly comprising a capsule holder comprising a capsule chamber for receiving a capsule. The capsule chamber has an air inlet and an air outlet opening. The inhalator further contains a capsule opening device within the chamber and a finger-operable acuator for the capsule opening device. The inhalator further comprises a rigid outer shell comprising two-part hinged upper and lower parts. The shell serves as a protector of the assembly and the mouthpiece or nosepiece when the inhalator is not in use.
