PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a series of ceramic ingots, referred to as base ingots, each having a shade corresponding to a different shade of a shade guide.SOLUTION: The number of differently shaded base ingots is less than the total number of shades associated with the shade guide. A base ingot is selected from the series of ceramic ingots having a shade of brightness as high as that of at least a shade associated with a patients tooth. If the base ingot shade matches the patients tooth, a restoration made with the selected base ingot itself can be glazed with surface lubricant. Otherwise the dental restoration is stained with a stain having lower brightness than that of the selected base ingot to match the tooth.
