The active electrode includes an electrode that detects an electric potential and generates an input signal, and a shield that is disposed in the vicinity of the electrode and is electrically insulated from the electrode. The integrated circuit amplifier (10) is connected to at least one of the electrodes, has an input for receiving the input signal, and provides a buffering path for outputting a buffered output signal. The shield is connected to the output of the integrated circuit amplifier to actively drive the potential of the shield, thereby providing an active shield for the electrode. The buffering path includes a first mixer (11) for frequency shifting the input signal from a fundamental frequency range to a higher frequency range before the integrated circuit amplifier, and the amplified signal is transferred from the high frequency range. A second mixer (12) that is frequency shifted back to the fundamental frequency range is included in the output of the integrated circuit amplifier.
