Compounds having the general structural formula (I) wherein X can be any element or compound that can form a coordination complex with phthalocyanine and wherein R1 R2, R3 and R4 are independently anionic moieties, or (II) wherein R1 R2, R3 and R4 are independently anionic moieties, are useful in the potentiation of antibiotic activity, and/or in inhibiting or delaying the development of resistance to antibiotics. R1 R2, R3 and R4 may be -S03-. The compounds may be administered to a subject in conjunction with an antibiotic. The antibiotic may be an activator of the SOS response, and may be a DNA gyrase inhibitor or a topoisomerase inhibitor.
