A heating or cooling device 2 for one or more samples, the device comprising a plurality of members 6 operable to heat and/or cool one or more samples 22, wherein each member has a sample contact surface and a biasing means. Each of the members is biased towards a resting position under the operation of the biasing means and is independently moveable with respect to the other members against bias under the application of a force on the sample contact surface. The biasing means may be a spring, or a resiliently deformable material. The sample may be held in a bag, flexible container or vial where the members conform to the shape of the container or bag and accordingly heat or cool the sample. The plurality of members may differentially heat or cool over time or location. A means to agitate the sample(s) may also be included. The members may be mounted using frames and/or supports which may themselves include biasing means. A corresponding method is also included
