Apparatus for applying current to a nerve (30), comprises an electrode assembly (20), which comprises: a housing (22), adapted to be placed around the nerve (30) and two or more cathodes (141a, 141b), fixed to the housing (22) at respective different cathodic longitudinal locations, and one or more anodes (142), fixed to the housing (22) at respective anodal longitudinal locations a control unit (140), which is coupled to the cathodes (141a, 141b) and the anodes (142), and which is configured to drive the cathodes (141a, 141b) to apply respective cathodic currents to the nerve (30), and the anodes (142) to apply respective anodal currents to the nerve (30), characterized in that (a) no anodes (142) are positioned longitudinally between the two or more cathodes (141a, 141b), and (b) no cathodes (141a, 141b) are positioned longitudinally between the one or more anodes (142).
