A transmission part 2 makes a predetermined number n of pieces of beam transmission means adjacent in the scan direction into a group, shares any number from one to n-1 of pieces of beam transmission means of adjacent groups in a plurality m of groups, sets a plurality of focal positions of each group in a predetermined region among a plurality of regions divided in the depth direction, and drives the plurality m of groups of beam transmission means to transmit the ultrasonic beams. A reception part 3 receives an echo signal from the focal position in each region in the depth direction to which the group transmits the ultrasonic beam for each group of beam transmission means, and outputs it as reception beam data from the focal position in each region. An image processing part 7 generates an image on the basis of each reception beam data.
