To provide an apparatus and a method for defining a major psoas muscle area in a tomographic image more easily.SOLUTION: A major psoas muscle area defining apparatus 1 for defining a major psoas muscle area in a two-dimensional tomographic image or a three-dimensional tomographic image of an animal including a human includes a pretreatment unit 11, a vertebra area defining unit 12, a seed point setting unit 13, and a muscle area defining unit 14. The pretreatment unit 11 subjects a tomographic image acquired by an X-ray CT apparatus or the like to noise reduction processing, and creates a tomographic image with an improved SN ratio. The vertebra area defining unit 12 defines a vertebra area in the image after the pretreatment. The seed point setting unit 13 sets a seed point for defining the major psoas muscle area in the image after the pretreatment on the basis of the vertebra area defined by the vertebra area defining unit 12. The muscle area defining unit 14 defines a major psoas muscle area around the seed point in the tomographic image by using a dynamic contour method.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1【課題】より簡便に断層画像において大腰筋の領域を画定することができる装置および方法を提供する。【解決手段】大腰筋領域画定装置１は、ヒトを含む動物の二次元断層画像または三次元断層画像において大腰筋の領域を画定する装置であって、前処理部１１、椎骨領域画定部１２、シード点設定部１３、筋肉領域画定部１４を備える。前処理部１１は、Ｘ線ＣＴ装置等により取得された断層画像に対してノイズ低減処理を行って、ＳＮ比が改善された断層画像を作成する。椎骨領域画定部１２は、前処理後の画像において椎骨の領域を画定する。シード点設定部１３は、椎骨領域画定部１２により画定された椎骨の領域に基づいて、前処理後の画像において大腰筋の領域を画定するためのシード点を設定する。筋肉領域画定部１４は、動的輪郭法を用いて断層画像においてシード点の周りに大腰筋の領域を画定する。【選択図】図１
