An apparatus to automatically secure an end of a needle after contact with ablood vessel. The apparatus includes ahousing (102) and a biasing member (114), where the housing includes a hollowinterior region extending between a proximal endand a distal end thereof. A proximal opening (106) is integrated into theproximal end, while a distal opening (110) is integratedinto the distal end. The proximal and distal openings are configured toreceive a needle (116) therethrough along a longitudinalaxis. The biasing member is coupled to the housing and configured to apply aforce to the needle. The force is oriented to displacethe needle relative to the longitudinal axis upon retracting an end of theneedle through the distal opening into the hollow interiorregion. Embodiments of the present invention may thus secure the end of theneedle within the hollow interior region after use toprevent accidental needle sticks and exposure to blood and blood-bornepathogens.
