PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a guiding catheter capable of making the guidewire to be used shorter for improved operability and also to provide a method of placing such a guiding catheter.SOLUTION: Provided is guiding catheter 10 which is inserted into a lumen of a living body and comprises a lumen 22 extending therethrough from the proximal end side to a distal opening 24 in the distal side, the guiding catheter including: a tube body 21 having a side hole 25 formed at a position proximal of the distal opening 24 in such a manner to open to a side surface a lid 40 capable of closing the side hole 25 and opening the side hole 25 when an outer surface 42 tilts to enter the lumen 22 and a connection 50 for tiltably connecting a proximal portion of the lid 40 to the tube body 21. The lid 40 allows a distal portion of the lid 40 to tilt into the lumen 22 with the connection 50 as a fulcrum.
