Disclosed is a system that prevents the development of infection and biofilm establishment in medical devices in general, and in particular Urinary Tract Infections (UTI), including Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI). The system comprises a medical device (such as a catheter) and an antimicrobial composition containing an antimicrobial compound. A medical device delivers the composition both to the inside and/or outside portions of the device, as well as to the inside of the bladder itself and to the urethra.
