An apparatus (100) for determining a stress and/or pain level of a subject comprises a processor (102). The processor (102) is configured to acquire, from a photoplethysmography sensor (104), a photoplethysmography signal obtained from a central part of the body of the subject. The processor (102) is also configured to identify a characteristic of the acquired photoplethysmography signal. The characteristic is normalized for blood pressure. The processor (102) is further configured to determine the stress and/or pain level of the subject from the acquired photoplethysmography signal based on the normalized characteristic.La présente invention concerne un appareil (100) permettant de déterminer un niveau de stress et/ou de douleur d'un sujet comprenant un processeur (102). Le processeur (102) est conçu pour acquérir, à partir d'un capteur de photopléthysmographie (104), un signal de photopléthysmographie obtenu à partir d'une partie centrale du corps du sujet.
