A pharmaceutical composition intended for oral administration containing a therapeutically effective amount of a combination of carotene and at least one phytosterol, wherein the ratio of the amount of said carotene to the amount of said phytosterol in said pharmaceutical composition is at most about 5: 1.2. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1, wherein said carotene is selected from the group consisting of lycopene, beta-carotene, lutein and astaxanthin. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 2, wherein said carotene is lycopene. The pharmaceutical composition according to claim 1, further comprising phytoen, phytofluene and at least one tocopherol.
