A method for trapping, and neutralizing or killing microorganisms on a surface includes applying a barrier-forming composition that comprises an antimicrobial agent onto an inanimate surface, forming a barrier layer on the inanimate surface, in the barrier, trapping and killing microorganisms encountered on the surface and encountered from the environment after the applying step is performed. A composition for performing the method is also included. The dual-action of trapping and killing produces a barrier layer that has a powerful and long-lasting antimicrobial cidal or static activity.
