Provided herein are methods, kits and devices for detecting ischemic stroke and identifying biomarkers of ischemic stroke. By assessing the expression pattern of ischemic stroke biomarkers in a biological sample, it may be possible to diagnose stroke in a time sensitive, bedside manner. The present invention provides, for example, a. Measuring the level of cell-free nucleic acid in a sample from a subject； b. Comparing said level of cell-free nucleic acid to a reference level of cell-free nucleic acid in a reference sample, wherein said reference sample is from a pseudo-stroke subject； and c.
