A needle insertion system for inserting a needle into a blood vessel, said system comprising: an imaging system (10) comprising: at least one infrared emitter (32, 34) configured to illuminate a region under a skin surface with infrared light waves (215)； an infrared detector (38) configured to accept infrared light waves (215) reflected from the region below the skin surface, said infrared detector (38) comprising an output to deliver a signal corresponding to unimproved image data ； a computing unit comprising an input for accepting said unimproved image data, a memory, means for the improvement and delivery of result images in which images of improved blood vessels are displayed within the images of the region under the skin surface, and an output to emit said improved images substantially in real time； a display device (40) for the introduction of said improved output images of said computing unit and the display of said improved images； and a power source in electrical communication with said infrared emitter (32, 34), said infrared detector (38), said computing unit, and said display device； and a needle comprising a needle tip and a needle body； wherein the elements of said system are adapted to fulfill the following functions: a user visualizes said display device of said imaging system (10) and locates a target blood vessel (220), aligns said needle body with said target blood vessel (220), pierce said blood vessel (220) with said needle tip, insert said needle into said target blood vessel (220), advance said needle until said display device of said imaging system shows that sufficient depth has been reached, it performs a medical procedure and removes said needle from said blood vessel (220), in which the means for improving and delivering the result images include a digital processing unit programmed with program means computer to improve and deliver the result images at a rate of at least five frames per second； wherein said imaging system (10) further
