According to a disclosed embodiment of the present invention, provided are a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus which is able to prevent reimaging that occurs due to wrong mounting, and ensure the safety of a patient due to overheating of an RF coil by determining the location or directivity of the RF coil positioned within a bore, based on value detected by a magnetic field sensor included in the RF coil and a control method thereof. A magnetic resonance imaging apparatus according to an embodiment comprises: a magnet assembly forming a magnetic field in an internal space thereof an RF receiving coil receiving a magnetic resonance signal excited from an object to which the magnetic field formed by the magnet assembly is applied a magnetic field sensor provided in the RF receiving coil, and detecting a voltage value based on a static magnetic field formed by the magnet assembly and a control unit determining whether the direction of the RF receiving coil entering the inside of the magnet assembly is normal based on the voltage value transmitted by the magnetic field sensor.개시된 발명의 일 실시예에 따르면, RF 코일에 포함된 자기장 센서의 검출값에 기초하여 보어 내에 위치한 RF 코일의 위치 또는 방향성을 판단함으로써, 잘못된 장착에 의해 발생할 수 있는 재촬영을 방지하고, RF 코일의 과열로 인한 환자의 안전을 보장하는 자기공명영상장치 및 그 제어방법을 제공한다.일 실시예에 따른 자기공명영상장치는 내부 공간에 자기장을 형성하는 자석 어셈블리 상기 자석 어셈블리가 형성하는 자기장이 인가된 대상체로부터 여기된 자기공명신호를 수신하는 RF 수신 코일 상기 RF 수신 코일에 마련되고, 상기 자석 어셈블리에 의해 형성된 정자장에 기초한 전압값을 검출하는 자기장 센서 상기 자기장 센서가 전달하는 전압값에 기초하여 상기 자석 어셈블리의 내부로 진입하는 상기 RF 수신 코일의 방향이 정상적인지 여부를 판단하는 제어부를 포함한다.
