Disclosed are various embodiments for scanning a surface using a fan light element comprising a light source and a single lens. The fan light source generates divergent light and projects the divergent light onto a single element lens. The single element lens collimates the light and generates a fan line that may be used to scan an outer surface. By using triangulation of the reflections captured when projected onto a surface, the scanned surface may be reconstructed.
