An electrically heated aerosol generating system (10) for receiving an aerosol-forming article (30) is disclosed. The system 10 includes a tubular portion 12 for receiving the aerosol-forming article 30 and a heater element 16 containing a distal end 22. The heater element 16 is located proximate the distal end of the tubular portion 12 such that when the aerosol forming article 30 is inserted into the tubular portion 12 the end surface 22 is proximate to the distal end of the aerosol-.
