An electric walk behind greens mower (100) having a traction drum split into a first half (102) and a second half (104), each half rotatable at a different speed to provide traction drive and steering for the mower (100) in response to actuation of hand controls (110, 112) by an operator, or in response to commands from an electronic controller (120) based on the signals from a proximity sensor (132) on the mower. The electric walk behind greens mower (100) includes a pair of electric traction drive motors (106, 108), one of the electric traction drive motors (106, 108) rotating each half of the split traction drum (102, 104).
