A medical probe includes an insertion tube, having alongitudinal axis and having a distal end. A distal tipis disposed at the distal end of the insertion tube andis configured to be brought into contact with a bodytissue. A joint couples the distal tip to the distal endof the insertion tube. A joint sensor, contained withinthe probe, senses a position of the distal tip relativeto the distal end of the insertion tube. The jointsensor includes first and second subassemblies, which aredisposed within the probe on opposite, respective sidesof the joint and each include one or more magnetictransducers.
