PURPOSE: To obtain a plant exhibiting a relative overexpression of an intracellular chitinase in the texture and having superior resistance against pathogenic fungi by gene manipulation using a recombinant polynucleotide. CONSTITUTION: A gene exhibiting a relative overexpression of an intracellular chitinase in at least one texture or encoding the chitinase is modified by gene manipulation using one or more recombinant polynucleotides so that the chitinase is targeted to the apoplastic space of a plant. It is preferable that the gene encoding the chitinase is modified by forming a translation-abeyant codon in a code region at the 3' terminal of the gene.
