A plant pathogen resistance gene present in rice cultivar CO39 and other plant species is disclosed. The gene is referred to as <i>Pi-CO39(t)</i> and confers resistance to strains of the plant pathogen, <i>Magnaporthe grisea</i> (causal agent of rice blast and other plant diseases), having a corresponding <i>AVR1 CO39</i> avirulence gene. Also disclosed are methods of using the resistance gene and its encoded products for improving resistance of plants to this pathogen.
