The present invention provides a method of using at least one enzyme capable of inhibiting a therapeutically effective amount of PAI-1 activity, treating a subject suffering from cardiovascular disease. The present invention, in subjects exhibiting risk factors of at least one associated with cardiovascular diseases, by administering to the subject at least one enzyme capable of inhibiting a therapeutically effective amount of PAI-1 activity , there is provided a method of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. The invention further provides a method of inhibiting PAI-1 activity in a subject in need thereof, in this case, the subject receives a dose of an enzyme selected from protease or peptidase.
