A method and apparatus for providing a local cooling of a surface is described. The local cooling device may include a thermal element configured to generate a temperature gradient at a cooling interface in contact with the surface. The temperature gradient can operate to facilitate conductive heat transfer from the surface, through the cooling interface, and out of the environment. The thermal element may comprise a thermoelectric cooling element (TEC), such as a Peltier cooling element.
