Compositions and methods for determining post-transfusion survival or toxicity of red blood cells (RBC) and the suitability of RBCs for transfusion by measuring the levels of one or more markers in a red blood cell sample are provided. The method comprising the steps of: a) measuring the levels of one or more markers in a RBC sample selected from the group consisting of Cytidine, 5-Methylcytidine, N4-Actelcytidine, 9-HODE, 13-HODE, Prostaglandin E2, 5-HETE, 12-HETE, 15-HETE, arachdonic acid, 1- palmitoylglycerophosphoinositol, 1-stearoylglycerophosphoinositol, 13, 14-dihydro-15-ketoprostaglandin E2, and the reticulocyte count of a blood donor at the time of donation; b) comparing the level of the one or more markers in the RBC sample with the level of the one or more markers present in a control sample, wherein a higher or lower level of the one or more markers in the RBC sample is indicative of a lower RBC storage quality.L'invention concerne des compositions et des procédés pour déterminer la survie post-transfusion ou la toxicité d'érythrocytes et l'aptitude d'unités d'érythrocytes pour la transfusion par mesure des niveaux d'un ou de plusieurs marqueurs dans un échantillon d'érythrocytes.
