The present invention provides a method for obtaining an immunogenic, non-haemolytic strain of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae which is modified, at least in a segment of the apxIA gene and optionally in a segment of the apxIIA gene that encodes a transmembrane domain of the Apx haemolytic and cytolytic exotoxins.
